After three days of delays, yesterday afternoon Neal was moved to an extended care facility. It has a 4 star rating from Medicare and is closer than other places he's been previously, so it's a shorter drive for me. And there is a lot of visitor's parking! There are adjustments as he and they get used to each other, and I'm not convinced that his diet is appropriate yet - haven't seen restrictions on salt, and Neal's blood sugar was sky high this morning after putting a little syrup on the last bite of his breakfast waffle. They gave him one shot of insulin and his next blood test showed it was way too low. That's not good. One sweet little nurse's aide went to the kitchen and brought back the powdered protein container so that Neal could verify what they were giving him as a protein drink. I thought it tasted all right, but it wasn't what he'd had at home or in the hospital so he was suspicious.
It has that feel of a nursing home - long halls with bedrooms on each side and multiple wheelchairs sitting around, but it doesn't smell like some nursing homes for which we are grateful. In the rooms they only receive three local channels, and the appeal of the big TV in the social area isn't much help since Neal is still limited in his time out of bed each day. Sadly there is no wireless access - can't believe there isn't a demand for it, but Neal may be the youngest guy on the first floor! There are some good points though: so far he doesn't have a roommate, his bed is by a bay window so he can watch the squirrels, and on the other side of the building he can actually catch a glimpse of the water in Puget Sound.
Enduring to the end in this case means six weeks as a patient while he recieves IV antibiotics to treat the infections in his bones. With luck, that will be followed by surgery to repair his heart and give him more than the 20% of normal heart function he has now. Keeping fingers and toes crossed that all will go smoothly.
